Crumpets are Actually Pretty Bad For You…

Why do bad things happen to good people? It’s not even to do with the lathering of butter you slap on top – but rather the actual crumpets themselves. After a new report from Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) suggests they contain a ridiculously large amount of salt.

Take one Warburtons Giant Crumpets, for example. Which contains more salt than three packets of ready salted crisps! With the average crumpet containing 0.62g of salt – the same amount as one and a half packets of ready salted crisps.

Professor Graham MacGregor, the chairman of CASH. Is now urging companies to meet salt reduction targets by the end of 2017. He said:

“Reducing salt is the most cost effective measure to lower blood pressure and reduce the number of people suffering from strokes and heart disease. One of the commonest causes of death in the UK. Salt reduction targets have been set for manufacturers to reach before the end of 2017. And if some companies (e.g. Warburtons) don’t achieve them, we must regulate the targets to ensure a level playing field. As requested by many of the supermarkets and British Retail Consortium.”

CASH also recommend limiting yourself to one (ONE.) crumpet when the cravings get too much, and being mindful of the amount of butter/spread you put on top.
